Never used a hook tyer in my life; one of the first things I always did when coaching youngsters was to get them to tie their own hooks.
To make it easier for them I used to shape a paper clip and use thread to get them started.

Regarding the loop size Joff, when I fished with Avon Bait, mike stone showed me a way to get them really small, he used two needles stuck in a bit of balsa about 3mm apart, when you form the loop put a needle in the loop and in the middle of the knot, wet and pull tight then slip the needle out of the knot and pull again to tighten it leaving a 3mm loop, I still do this as its very neat.
