Colin was fishing with his son in an attempt to bag up big time on the carp at Cansiron lakes but as its very shallow and we have had a few cold nights, Tony and I thought we would leave him to it and concentrate on the silvers. Now Sumners has been developed as a caravan site on a farm and has a very good reputation for the high quality of its facilites and especially the fish in the main lake. I have fished it a few times before and although never bagged up but always had several good fish plus plenty of skimmers. It was also the venue for 2 Maggotdrowners Fishins I ran in 2004 and 2005.
We both arrived at dead on 10 and as usual felt that an all day brekkie and a chat to the baliff was in order before we chose our swims. As I felt like catching some perch I went for a swim towards the end of the café bank which had two bushes to my left, one down the edge and the other at around 7 metres just past a small bay to my left. I left the small bush on my right to Tony who had settled on a peg about 7 yards to my right.

I started on the long swim and after a slow start managed a few roach but notmuch else so I refed with my cup and set up a rig to fish short where I had been flicking some caster and pellet. This produced several net roach and skimmers. Mean while Tony was struggling at 9 metres plus in the sidewind and only had very small roach on maggot.
After a bit of chopping and changing between my 1 swims I had a bream of around 2 ½ lbs only to be outdone buy Tony with a 4lb fish

He had now come a section shorter and gone a few inches overdepth to combat the tow and was now getting a number of skimmers.
We both had trouble keeping the bites coming as we would get 2 or 3 fish before the bites stopped for a while , still the fish we were getting were worth waiting for. My next good fish was this 1lb 11oz perch followed by what seemed like a much bigger one …. Until the hook fell out half way to the net. >:(

Shrtly after Tony asked why I didn’t go for the skimmers to which I said Im after those big perch by the bush and just after I said it he proceeded to net this one at 2lb 10oz from straight out. :'(

From then on we both suffered dry spells so I went straight out to see if I could get amoungst the skimmers and had 2 net fish in 2 chucks only for it to die straightway. So it was back to the long bush with a whole worm sh!t or bust for a perch. After a while I had a tentative bite which I hit a decent fish and had visions of landing the targeted 2lb perch, only for this 2 1/2lb tench to pop up into the net.

Shortly after I decided to call it a day only for Tony on his customary 4th last cast to hit this lovely 1lb 12oz roach.

All in all a good days fishing with some quality fish landed. Not as many as I had hoped but certainly not bad for a cold windy day in March. We will be back fairly soon before the lake gets taken over by the caravanners for the summer.
Couldn’t resist this final pic from the small lake on our way out. I thought it would be an ideal place for TK to spend the day.

What of Colin and his big bagup session at Cansiron..........
He had only one small carp and his son had one perch, so it looks like we made the right choice to fish Sumners.
